Lanterns: Traditional Rankei Lantern

About Lanterns

Japanese stone lanterns were first used in ancient Shinto shrines where they served as votive lights. In the sixteenth century, Japanese tea masters included the stone lantern in Buddhist tea gardens as a means to light the way with their rustic beauty and rich light. From classic to contemporary, Stone Forest lanterns are informed by this centuries-old tradition.

Description: This traditional Japanese stone lantern was originally created to stand near ponds, streams, or rivers. It casts light in all directions to create inviting reflections.

The wide roof of this Japanese stone lantern reflects the flatness of the water and catches snow in colder climates to further connect it with its natural surroundings. We carve the Rankei stone lantern in high density blue-gray granite to hold its intricate detailing.
